Lumina is an Italian design company, founded by Tommaso Cimini in 1980 in Sedriano, near Milan. The story began already in the 1970s, when Cimini worked from the idea of creating “Lots of light, not much lamp”. The focus was on designing simple, technologically advanced lamps made from uncompromisingly high-quality materials. The minimalist expression has today become iconic and Lumina has managed to create several classics, including Daphine – a design that has become a timeless icon of Italian design.

The first prototype of Daphine was designed by Tommaso Cimini in 1975 and consisted of a transformer as a base, an arm in two segments and an adjustable diffuser with a halogen light source. The original design has been preserved over the years with only minor technical adjustments to keep up with the times, without compromising either quality or Lumina’s DNA. At the same time, Lumina maintains close collaborations with several renowned international architects and designers, including Foster + Partners, who are behind a number of Lumina’s designs, such as Flo and Dot.

Today, Ettore Cimini, son of Tommaso Cimini, runs the company in accordance with the original vision and Lumina’s lamps are produced in Arluno, a few kilometers from Sedriano, where it all began. The focus here is on preserving Italian design tradition, craftsmanship precision, and technical know-how. There is an increasing emphasis on resource saving and recycling, using long-lasting and repairable materials such as steel, aluminium, and glass, which can be fully disassembled at the end of their life – a concept known as “Design for Disassembly”.

Lumina’s collections are designed for both private homes and commercial spaces, with collections that are all timeless and minimalist. In our showroom in Nordhavn, several of the classic Daphine designs are on display and can be viewed by appointment during our opening hours, Monday–Friday from 09:00 to 16:00.
